Langside School is a day, special school for pupils who have a physical disability and learning difficulty. It is an all age school for up to 40 pupils from 2.5 to 19 years. The school is run by Dorset Scope which is a locally based charitable organisation.
The school operates an holistic approach integrating education, therapy and care into individual education programmes which cater for every aspect of a child's development. As well as on site physiotherapy and speech therapy, the school can also offer support from a full time occupational therapist and part time music therapist. There are also two full time nurses on site.
The school has a range of specialist facilities. As well as a hydrotherapy pool there are sensory rooms, a music room and a science room and we are about to develop an art room and a food technology room.
The school is divided into five class groups, each class having eight to ten pupils with a teacher and two full time care assistants. With support from other teachers, and the therapists, groups can be kept small in order to cater for each child's individual needs.
Dorset Scope also run a respite care facility, to which all the children have access, and a training centre for adults to provide extended learning opportunities for our pupils when they leave school.
